Disadvantages of Alarm Monitoring with VoIP (Voice over IP)

With the popularity of Voice over IP telephone systems skyrocketing over the past two years, the interest to monitor home or business alarm systems over a VOIP connection has also increased dramatically.

While technically it is possible to accomplish alarm monitoring through a Voice over IP telephone connection, we’re going to give you a couple of reasons why monitoring your home alarm system through VOIP isn’t such a good idea.

VOIP requires the Internet – This seems like a no-brainer, but many people purchase VoIP telephone service as part of a bundled package without realizing that their phone service now operates over the internet. This means that if for some reason your internet connection goes down or isn’t working properly, the monitoring station might not be able to receive your alarm signal when it matters most.

VoIP requires Power – As we mentioned previously, VoIP telephone services requires the Internet which means that it requires power to run the router and modem that power your internet connection. If the power goes out, without a battery backup system, you will not have phone service and your alarm system will not be able to dial out to the monitoring center in the event of an emergency. An alarm system connected to a traditional POTS (plain old telephone service) phone line works even when the power is out because the POTS line is self powered, meaning it works even when your electricity is out allowing your alarm system (which generally has a built in battery backup) to dial out during a power outage.

VoIP Quality of Service – The quality of service with VoIP varies dramatically between providers. Alarm panels need a high quality telephone connection in order to communicate alarm signals over VoIP. Alarm panels communicate much like a fax machine, and if the VoIP connection is too greatly compressed and the audio quality is degraded, the alarm panel will not be able to communicate effectively or reliably with the central station. This leads to an unreliable alarm monitoring situation that is unpredictable. This situation is not preferable for monitoring emergency situations such as theft or fire.

A better option that allows you to keep you VoIP telephone service and all of the associated benefits but will give you a more confident alarm monitoring system is Cellular monitoring. Cellular alarm monitoring uses a CDMA or GSM connection to wirelessly communicate your alarm signals much like a cell phone. This system does not require power and is not subject to failures like VoIP can be. While it costs a few extra dollars per month for the cellular connection, it is a much better alternative to trusting an unreliable VoIP connection with the significant task of monitoring your residence or business.

The Advantages of CS-Mount Security Cameras

C-mount security cameras (or cs mount security cameras, as they are sometimes called) were the first security cameras and defined the industry. In 1970′s and 1980′s, cs-mount camera were invented, but they were simply known as security cameras because cs-mount cameras were the single design available. The iconic boxy c-mount shape was necessary because in the 70′s the circuit boards and other internal items in cameras were still very large. As technology has improved over time, security cameras were able to get much smaller and the bullet camera shape has begun to define the idea of a security camera.

Despite no longer defining the industry, cs-mount security cameras still retain many reasons to use them in your security camera setup. The biggest of these reasons is their superior resolution, as c-mount security cameras still give the highest resolution of any security camera type. The reason for the superior resolution comes down to the mold of the camera itself. C-mount security cameras can deal with a 1/2 inch chip set, whereas most other cameras are limited to 1/4 or 1/3 inch chip types. A larger chip set means that the camera has more pixels than a smaller one, and the more pixels the better the video. Another advantage of these larger sensors is better sensitivity in low light.

C-mount cameras are very effective when used in interior security setups, but face challenges when used in exterior setups. To be used on exterior walls , c-mount surveillance cameras need special mounting brackets to fix them on outside walls and housings to protect cs-mount cameras from the the environment.

The aptitude of a c-mount camera to be usable in low level lighting conditions is measured by a stat called lux rating. A lux is used to express how much ambient light there is in a space. The lower the lux rating on the security camera the less light there needs to be for the CCD to properly capture a usable image, but keep in mind, the low lux rating come with a higher price tag.

When selecting a c-mount camera, it is important to not forget that they do not come with a lens, which makes them both more expense at the onset and more interchangeable. Having a large initial price tag does not tell the whole story, however, as most cs-mount cameras become far cheaper in the long run. This is because a cs-mount camera can be repurposed in a surveillance setup that has changed simply by buying a new lens rather than having to buy a new security camera.

The largest drawback of a cs-mount security camera is that they are hard to use outside. If you want to use a c-mount camera outdoors, you will need to obtain a c-mount housing, which will give it protection from rain, wind, and the elements. Another piece of equipment you will need is a mounting bracket, so that it can be affixed wherever it is needed. Particular housings come equipped with heaters and blowers so that they can be used in the very high and low temperatures.

CS-mount security cameras also help to prevent illegal activities, as their obtrusive size makes them extremely noticable. As such, many banks, businesses, and government offices use them. They make the very obvious statement “You are being watched.”

Basically, c-mount cameras are the first security camera to turn to if you want a low maintenance, crisp clean video capture, a very versatile indoor camera, or a camera that is capable of capturing usable footage in very low light conditions. Conversely, If you are looking for an outdoor camera that does not necessitate having the absolute highest quality video or lux rating, might want to research a bullet security camera. For an indoor environment and high quality video, you can’t go wrong.

Another “Worst Practice” Privacy Invasion

Do you believe it when the Federal government says they aren’t reading your mail?  I don’t.  Now, the British have just as much to fear:

Lord West told Parliament on Monday that civil servants working on the Interception Modernisation Programme (IMP) were considering how Deep Packet Inspection (DPI) equipment "might support the lawful interception of communications and separately the lawful acquisition of communications data".

It’s the first time the government has publicly acknowledged its interest in DPI equipment. A delayed Home Office consultation on IMP is due to be launched "shortly", West said.

This in turn would facilitate the second aim of the system, the interception of the content of internet communications. As now, this would require a warrant under the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act (RIPA), but each wiretap would be much easier to implement.

West’s comments confirm our sources’ information that officials are considering a network of DPI probes inside the UK internet and telecoms infrastructure that could fulfil each ambition. The equipment can monitor everything in each data packet passing its location in the network, allowing both "the lawful acquisition of communications data" and the "the lawful interception of communications".

The hardware would be much the same as that Phorm plans to use in its ISP-level targeted advertising system, albeit on a far grander scale. Leaked estimates have put the cost of a ubiquitous DPI network and central database at £12bn. DPI would account for the lion’s share of that figure. The two controversial systems have both arisen out of rapid advancements in chip and network technology that have made monitoring IP networks at line speed feasible, however.

That development of surveillance power in the last decade is illustrated by a letter to the editor of The Guardian by then-National Criminal Intelligence Service Director General John Abbott, in 2000.

He wrote: "Conspiracy theorists must not be allowed to get away with the ridiculous notion that law enforcement would or even could monitor all emails. The intelligence agencies have neither the inclination nor the resources, nor the legal ability to monitor the massive amounts of electronic communications that flow through the UK every day.

"It does not happen with letters or telephones and it will not with emails."

Nine years later, the DPI equipment being considered by the government would allow exactly that.

When you vote, think hard about who you are voting for.  And when you speak, be very careful what you say.  It isn’t “conspiracy theory”  as John Abbott tried to suggest, it is now reality.

A Clark Middle/High School band teacher pleaded not guilty Monday in Lake Criminal Court to charges alleging he had sex with one of his eighth-grade students.
James Ciammetti, 41, was charged Friday with five felonies — two counts of child molesting, two counts of sexual misconduct with a minor and one count of child solicitation. He is accused of having a sexual relationship with a 14-year-old girl at the Hammond school.
Police have said Ciammetti and the girl had sex multiple times on school grounds during the course of a 10-month relationship.
The Oak Lawn, Ill., man’s alleged activities were discovered by the girl’s father, who was using a computer program that tracks his children’s activities on the family’s computers, court records allege.

no, they won’t tell you … and you won’t know … unless you use some of the special tools available to parents who care.  This girl wanted the relationship and kept it hidden.  It’s up to parents to be on the alert because this case is hardly unique.  Under the law, older men and women, often teachers, are under the law guilty of "Preying upon" children.  But this isn’t forcible rape in some back alley.  To the participants, it doesn’t seem like "preying".  It seems like a love affair, often something really "special" and the children involved often go to great lengths to keep it hidden.

The kids have a need to act out, the perverted adults are there to accommodate them, and the parents never even has a clue.  How many filth emails does your daughter send out each day?

Some People Would Be Better Off — The Internet, That Is.

It’s Friday am here at blog central and I note that a lot of my posts have been kind of serious and dry.  Since the Republicans have just about finished boring St. Paul to death and will be leaving town soon, like dust in the wind, I thought I would give a few of you a little humor for the weekend.

Here’s a typical member off the "base".  A self-proclaimed "housewife" … geez people get all riled up about same sex marriage and yet they allow women to cohabit with houses?  Talk about having no pride in yourself whatsoever….

Anyway, this lady apparently put up a web site.  Many of us do.  Then, she discovered that, wow, different companies for various reasons send ‘bots’ to search web sites.  In this case she apparently got her knickers in a knot because the bot apparently is searching for illegal use of brand names.

Welcome to the real world, "Toots".  If you put a web site online it is going to be searched … that’s a function of how the ‘Net operates and you opted in by going online.  Can you control who visits and what parts of your site they visit?  yes …unless they are the Federal Government who watches even what pages research and what library books you read, but hey, that’s to protect us in the current "phony war", isn’t it?

Anyway, even Republicans should learn what 20 year-ld technology (the Internet) is before they put up a public website.  Perhaps I should give out her URL and IP address and phone number, but she already does on her site.

“I caught your bot snooping around my site and I don’t appreciate your spying attempt. I will block any such attempts to snoop in the future by any means necessary. If you vampires have a problem with my site then come to me directly! I will address any legitimate Copyright or IP concerns IMMEDIATELY. Any material found on xxxxxx in violation any kind of US Copyright law will be immediately REMOVED!”

Chill, Jen, God I am glad I am not your husband or one of your children … do you know how much anger and vitriol shortens your life span?  If you don’t want people searching your site, then you need to take it out of the public domain .. that’s the first rule of learning what’s happening in snooping.

COFEE – "Computer Online Forensic Evidence Extractor"

Wake up and smell the cofee, folks.  I am all for catching child molesters.  I an not for police agencies spending their time sitting around masquerading as underage girls on line.  I am also not in favor of giving agencies tools to let them sit at their desks and snoop computers at will, "looking" for evidence.  This is sad, and a true example of how the 9-11 terrorists were really extremely successful … at the cost of 19 lives (on their side) they complete changed the way our once proud country operates, and pissed on the US Constitution. 

Microsoft is now talking about COFEE, a tool they have released to some law enforcement agencies to let them take a look at Windows computer in a faster, less intrusive way that’s easy to use. COFEE stands for "Computer Online Forensic Evidence Extractor" and details about what it can do are thin on the ground. That’s understandable from a law enforcement perspective but when you combine a lack of hard facts to a distrust of Microsoft and some government agencies you get plenty of rumor, guesswork and outright paranoia all across the Internet. You know, I live, by choice, outside the US.  I often wonder at the strangely paranoid fears many of many ‘within the US’ friends express to me about the dangers and uncertainties of my lifestyle.  Then I see how my fellow Americans are bending over and knuckling \under to completely unconstitutional invasive techniques such as COFEE and the almost un-mentioned Carnivore, and I see that those friends aren’t acting like wimps because of their lack of knowledge of other countries .. they are wimps.  What happened, America?  Grow some balls!

Lawyer seeks text messages, GPS coordinates from night stripper died

A lawyer today said he will seek text messages from every City of Detroit employee sent during a 4-hour window on the night a stripper known as Strawberry was shot dead in the city.

In addition, Norman Yatooma wants global position system coordinates that show the physical location of each of those employees.

Yatooma of Birmingham filed the subpoena to Clinton, Miss.-based Skytel Inc. for the text messages today in Detroit’s U.S. District Court. He is representing Tamara Greene’s 14-year-old son, Jonathan Bond, in a federal lawsuit alleging that police and city officials covered up her April 30, 2003, death…. see the Detroit Free Press article here:

There’s a lot more in the article of interest to anyone concerned with privacy or concerned with pulling the blanket of ‘privacy’ (sometimes used as another name for conspiracy) away from mysterious cases.

There’s’ a big chance attorney Yatooma won’t get all that much in the way of GPS locations … especially in 2003 there were not all that many devices out there equipped and turned on.  But think for a minute how many text messages and pager messages might have flown about from the time the victim was discovered until police had their public relations people out of bed and in place to clamp the ‘on-going investigation’ lid down on top of the affair.

If I were a person interested in seeing justice done I’d certainly applaud this effort.  If I were concerned about who might see me or monitor me in how I did my job?  I’d get rid of my cell phone, Blackberry and/or pager now .. right now … and never carry them again.
